What is Laser Therapy?

L.A.S.E.R. (Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation)is the name of a device that projects intense radiation of the light spectrum. It produces a beam of light in which high energies can be concentrated.

LLLT(Low Level Laser Therapy) is also referred to as cold laser therapy, low-power laser therapy (LPLT), low-intensity laser, low-energy laser therapy, and monochromatic infrared light energy (MIRE) therapy.

LLLT have been promoted as an effective way to produce analgesia and accelerate healing of a variety of clinical conditions.

By definition, low energy laser therapy uses irradiation intensities that induce minimal temperature elevation (not more than 0.1 to 0.5°C), if any. For practical purposes, this restricts treatment energies to a few J/cm2 and laser powers to 500 mW or less.

-Low-level, non-cutting lasers are commonly used in many areas of general medicine and veterinary practice.

-Their use in treating pathology is based on photobiostimulation, in which laser energy is absorbed by inter- and intra-cellular targets,

resulting in a secondary stimulation of tissue healing mechanisms.

-In dentistry, a number of clinical conditions affecting the teeth and jaws may be amenable to low-level laser therapy.

-Photo-activated disinfection, where a drug or chemical is introduced and activated by laser light, can be used in dentistry to treat bacterial infection in endodontics and periodontology.

-Additional uses of low-level laser light include caries detection and scanning techniques in orthodontics and restorative dentistry.
