Low Laser Therapy and Acupuncture

Low level lasers are often compared to “acupuncture with a laser beam”. When administered to so-called "acupuncture points," the procedure may be called "laser acupuncture." The providers include physicians, chiropractors, physical therapists, and occupational therapists.

Currently there are over 25 different Low level lasers that have been cleared by the FDA for various types of treatments. Low level laser therapy (LLLT) have been proven completely safe in over 3000 worldwide studies. LLLT have been in use around the world for over 30 years and have been in use in the US for over 10 years. In most LLLT treatments, the laser beam is use to stimulate the body’s acupoints or damaged area in an attempt to increase the blood supply to parts of the body. The energy from the laser may penetrate as deep as 2 inches into the body based on the power of the laser and other variables.

Low Level Laser Therapy is considered an alternative therapy just like Acupuncture. Low Level laser treatments can often be combined with traditional treatment for even better results. Although some patients may be able to benefit from just one treatment, most patients need multiple treatments.

If a dentist is trained in acupuncture, the low level laser will be a very convenient way of replacing the needles in many instances, for corporal or auricular acupuncture. Needles are not too popular with the patients, so the laser will be appreciated. Even for a dentist not practicing acupuncture, there are some well defined acupuncture points which can be used, for instance to reduce nausea.
